![]() Sometimes, the difference is pretty clear-on a narrow bridge, you know you can move in one direction or the other, and that's it. You often don't know for sure whether you can move to a new area or whether it's just part of the noninteractive scenery until you actually press the X button. Movement through the world of Myst III poses some other problems. There's a "zip" feature that lets you quickly move between places you've already visited, but it's available only a fraction of the time. Seeing a colorful locale the first or second time can be a real treat, but having to walk through it repeatedly just to solve puzzles that let you proceed to a locked area gets tedious in a hurry. Some puzzles will require you to manipulate multiple objects in different locations, so even if you figure out how they should be operated, you might still need to traipse back and forth to get the job done. The exploration and puzzle solving can be very satisfying in their own right, but taken together they can be a bit dull at times. Myst III's gameplay revolves solely around exploration and puzzle solving as you try to catch the ever-elusive Saavedro by figuring out how to manipulate the strange devices found in the game's various ages. The PS2 version suffers from some technical shortcomings. Together, these faults underscore one of the chief weaknesses of Myst III: It's a very slow game. The loading message that sometimes appears also breaks the illusion of being in another world. The pause when you move between areas in the PS2 version is longer than it is in the Xbox and PC versions, and the screen also blurs as the new area is loading. To move to a new area, you simply align the cursor with the area and press the X button to "jump" there. You can pan the camera fluidly in any direction with the left stick, the D pad, or a USB mouse, which creates a reasonable simulation of exploring a living 3D world. ![]() From a first-person view, you examine and interact with discrete areas composed of largely static backdrops. That's certainly true of Myst III: Exile. While the Myst games are most closely associated with the PC, their interfaces have always been more reminiscent of console-game interfaces in their streamlined simplicity. It's not a particularly deep story, but it serves its purpose as a framework that lets you visit wildly different-looking "ages" while you and Saavedro play a game of cat and mouse across time and space. It's your job to uncover Saavedro's plots and thwart his plans. One of their misdeeds resulted in the destruction of the homeworld of Saavedro, who has since given his life over to bitterness and the pursuit of revenge against Atrus and his family. These very sons give rise to the story behind Myst III. In Myst, you learned that Atrus, a part-D'ni scribe, imprisoned his malevolent sons, Sirrus and Achenar, in distant ages and then destroyed the books linking to those worlds, trapping the sons there forever. Central to the stories of those earlier games are the D'ni, a race with the ability to write magical books that create links to the worlds, or "ages," described in them. Myst III: Exile builds on the mythology of Myst and Riven. Myst III is a port of a well-received adventure game for the PC. The technical limitations of the PS2 don't do the game full justice, but if you can look past those and other faults, you'll find a rewarding experience. The latest entry in the Myst saga, Myst III: Exile, was released last year on the PC to good reviews, and now it makes its way to the PS2. ![]() Myst and its sequel, Riven, went on to become the all-time best-selling PC game series, and they were only recently dethroned by The Sims. You couldn't die in the game, and there was no combat of any kind. Playing Myst was like wandering into an enchanted art gallery-or a tedious slide show, depending on your disposition. Through a simple interface, you navigated a surrealistic island composed of beautiful but static prerendered scenes. When Myst was released in 1993, it brought the adventure game experience to a near standstill. PC adventure games have long tended to be slow-paced, cerebral affairs with little action or even interaction. In the world of PC gaming, "adventure game" usually has a very different connotation, thanks in good part to the Myst series. When you think of adventure games, you probably think of games that actually make you feel adventurous, games that let you charge through exotic environments, sword or gun in hand, as ready to blast or hack at an enemy as to solve some puzzles. ![]() The "S" initially stood for "surrogate" ( суррогатированная, surrogatirovannaya), but later the letter was taken to refer to the steel component ( стальной, stal'noy) of the core, which accounted for about 50% of the core volume. This bullet was given the acronym "7.62 PS" (76.2 ПС). The use of low-carbon (mild) steel was guided mostly by the desire to reuse some industrial equipment that was manufacturing the 7.62×25mm Tokarev cartridge rather than by bullet fragmentation considerations. In order to preserve the total length of the cartridge, the case sleeve was shortened to 38.7 mm (and by rounding it is customarily referred to as 7.62×39.) Additionally, the new bullet had a core made of lead wrapped in low-carbon steel. The maximum radius was now attained at some 15.95 mm from the tip and the overall length of the bullet increased to 26.8 mm. In order to maintain the overall mass of the bullet, after adding the boat tail, the ogival head section of the bullet was lengthened as well, making the bullet more streamlined overall. However, further testing showed that the boat tail improved accuracy even at shorter ranges, where the bullet was still supersonic. Initially, the boat tail had been omitted because the Soviet designers had assumed (incorrectly) that it would only make a difference at long ranges, when the bullet became subsonic, and the accuracy of the intermediate cartridge at these ranges was considered inconsequential. Īfter more detailed testing results became available, starting in 1947 the cartridge was tweaked by the Ulyanovsk Machine Building Plant to improve its accuracy and penetration. After some further refinements, a pilot production series of this cartridge began in March 1944. This bullet has a somewhat stubbier appearance than later 7.62×39 bullets, with its maximal radius being attained after only 13.01 mm from its tip, and it was lacking a boat tail. The bullet it contained was 22.8 mm long and had a core made entirely of lead. This cartridge actually had a case length of 41 mm, so it is sometimes referred to as the 7.62×41. Ī first variant of the new cartridge was officially adopted for service after completing range trials in December 1943 it was given the GRAU index 57-N-231. Most of the development work on the new cartridge took place at OKB-44, which was soon thereafter renamed as NII-44, and which in 1949 was merged with NII-61, itself merged with TsNIITochMash ("Central Scientific-Research Institute for Precision Machine Engineering") in 1966. About 314 cartridge designs were considered theoretically, before narrowing the selection down to eight models that were physically constructed and tested. Elizarov collaborated closely with some leading weapons designers, including Fedorov, Tokarev, Simonov, and Shpagin. The job of designing the Soviet intermediate cartridge was assigned to a committee led by chief designer N.M. The Soviet planners also decided at this meeting that their new cartridge was to be used in a whole range of infantry weapons, including a semi-automatic carbine, a selective fire rifle, and a light machine gun. On July 15, 1943, the Technical Council of the People's Commissariat for Armaments ( Russian: Техсовет Наркомата Вооружения) met to discuss the introduction of a Soviet intermediate cartridge. History Steel-cased 7.62×39mm FMJ cartridge Fourth from left, 7.62×39mm shown alongside other cartridges In the 21st century the 7.62×39mm remains a common service rifle chambering, including for newly developed rifles like the AK-15. It was partly replaced in Soviet service by the 5.45×39mm cartridge, which was introduced with the new AK-74 rifle, and continues in service with the modernized current-issue Russian Armed Forces AK-74M service rifle, as well as the AK-12 rifle. The cartridge remained the Soviet standard until the 1970s. This weapon is now the world's most widespread military-pattern rifle. The AK-47 was designed shortly after WWII, later becoming the AKM because the production of sheet metal had issues when first initiated. The cartridge is widely used due to the worldwide proliferation of Russian SKS and AK-47 pattern rifles, as well as RPD and RPK light machine guns. 30 Russian Short) round is a rimless bottlenecked intermediate cartridge of Soviet origin. Note that neither the haversine formula nor Lambert's formula provides an exact distance because it is not possible to account for every irregularity on the surface of the Earth.I have an excel sheet with UTM coordinates (Easting and Northing) for four points. In the expressions above, β 1 and β 1 are reduced latitudes using the equation below: Where a is the equatorial radius of the ellipsoid (in this case the Earth), σ is the central angle in radians between the points of latitude and longitude (found using a method such as the haversine formula), f is the flattening of the Earth, and X and Y are expanded below. When used to approximate the Earth and calculate the distance on the Earth surface, it has an accuracy on the order of 10 meters over thousands of kilometers, which is more precise than the haversine formula. Lambert's formula (the formula used by the calculators above) is the method used to calculate the shortest distance along the surface of an ellipsoid. Because of this, Lambert's formula (an ellipsoidal-surface formula), more precisely approximates the surface of the Earth than the haversine formula (a spherical-surface formula) can. Results using the haversine formula may have an error of up to 0.5% because the Earth is not a perfect sphere, but an ellipsoid with a radius of 6,378 km (3,963 mi) at the equator and a radius of 6,357 km (3,950 mi) at a pole. The haversine formula works by finding the great-circle distance between points of latitude and longitude on a sphere, which can be used to approximate distance on the Earth (since it is mostly spherical). In the haversine formula, d is the distance between two points along a great circle, r is the radius of the sphere, ϕ 1 and ϕ 2 are the latitudes of the two points, and λ 1 and λ 2 are the longitudes of the two points, all in radians.
